Extremadamente interesante.
"One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs
"One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs
And the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls".
These verses written by the 17th-century Iranian poet Saib-e-Tabrizi inspired Khaled Hosseini to entitle the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns. The whole poem is named Kabul and it shows a beautiful city- a vision that differs from what Western people usually imagine. When we hear the word "Afghanistan" we picture terrorism and war. It is hard to imagine such an appealing place as Saib-e-Tabrizi once said.
Nevertheless, we can get immersed in magical Kabul through his work. These books offer us a panoramic view of Afghanistan along the last 50 years. Futhermore- and this is the best part of it all- we can feel his fondness towards this country.
A Thousand Splendid Suns followed his bestselling debut, The Kite Runner. They both share an Afghan setting and a lot of harsh situations. However, this second novel focuses on the female's figure. It shows all the hardships and adversities Afghan women have been through. Unfortunately, these cruel situations still happen in many places around the world.
Khaled Hosseini said: "I think of it as my modest tribute to the great courage, endurance and resilience of Afghanistan". This is it: a great, but tough novel that transports you to this quite unfamiliar country.
In few words: Gripping and breathtaking. Extremely interesting.
